Where Art, Architecture and Nature Come Together

Located in Whangārei’s Town Basin, the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery brings together the visionary work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser and leading contemporary Māori artists.

The Centre celebrates Hundertwasser’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature through vibrant colours, curved lines, organic forms and architectural features such as the Afforested Roof, golden cupola and trees growing from windows.

Home to the largest collection of Hundertwasser’s work outside Vienna, the Centre offers an immersive experience through the Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973–2000 Exhibition, showcasing paintings, tapestries, architectural models and ecological projects. The Wairau Māori Art Gallery, Aotearoa’s first dedicated public Māori art gallery, presents rotating exhibitions by Māori artists.

Visitors can enjoy 360° views from the Afforested Roof, join a guided tour (Thu–Sun, 11am), watch a documentary about Hundertwasser’s life and explore unique items in the MuseumShop.
