Activity Centre Community Exhibitions
A key part of the Hundertwasser Art Centre public programmes is to connect in meaningful ways with our community. Over the years we have had the opportunity to support and share the creativity and inspiration of several special communities with free exhibitions in our Activity Centre. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to host a community exhibition in the Activity Centre. Email us at enquiries@hundertwasserartcentre.co.nz or call 09 430 4230.

Past exhibitions
I Have a Dream Charitable Trust
Each year since we opened there have been exhibitions in our Activity Centre to share children's creative exploration and learnings from the I Have a Dream after-school programme. These exhibitions are an opportunity to celebrate the Dreamers, share their experiences with their whānau, raise awareness of I Have a Dream and thank the donors, supporters and friends. The exhibitions strengthen our partnership built on our shared values of accessibility, community enrichment and creativity, and encourage a sense of connection and accessibility between the I Have a Dream community and the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery.
4 + 5 October 2025 - Term 3 Exhibition
This term Dreamers were thinking about the environment and how it changes with time. We made fantastical animals which we imagined would roam the world if humans had not made such an impact on the environment. We thought about alternative shapes for buildings and structures to imagine how our cities could look if we were more open-minded. We also painted with whenua/earth pigment in celebration of our connection to land and environment.
5 + 6 July 2025 - Term 2 Exhibition
This term our Dreamers were learning about Puanga Matariki. They wove stars in hoops in recognition of the nine stars of Matariki as well as Puanga. We learnt about our precious water and how to protect it. The dreamers also met celebrated Māori artist Turumeke Harrington and learnt how to paint with whenua/earth pigment and the significance of this for Māori.
5 + 6 April 2025 - Term 1 Exhibition
From our ongoing partnership with the I Have A Dream Charitable Trust we were delighted to present a vision of the future from Year 3 students at Tikipunga Primary and Totara Grove Primary. Inspired by Hundertwasser’s thoughtful and humanising approach to architecture, the dreamers tried their hand at creating buildings suitable for the spirit of man and at harmony with nature.
27 November 2024 - I Have A Dream End of Year Celebration and Exhibition
A night to recognise the amazing efforts of the Dreamers who attended Hundertwasser Art Centre after school programmes in the year of 2024. Their artworks were displayed as well as many photos from their experiences over the year. During the evening a collaborative artwork of the Dreamers was auctioned off with funds raised to support the ongoing work of the I Have a Dream Charitable Trust.
13 December 2023 - I Have A Dream End of Year Celebration and Exhibition
An evening to celebrate the Dreamers of 2023. Display of Dreamers' work, not focused on producing a ‘completed piece of art’ but rather acknowledging that for many of the Dreamers their time at the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is about exploring and joy.
LYNKZ Drop in – Link up
Our journey with LYNKZ, a NorthAble community-based service for people aged between 16 and 64 who have learning, intellectual, physical or sensory disabilities and/or conditions, started with a pilot project in 2024 and we’ve never looked back. Since then, we have had the pleasure to host LYNKZ once a month for creative workshops in our Activity Centre. To celebrate the LYNKZ whānau and their creative journey we have had a series of free open to the public exhibitions of their work.
“Together As One” – The 2025 Lions Peace Poster Competition
For over three decades, Lions have been sponsoring a very special art contest in schools and youth groups. Creating peace posters gives children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity. The contest is for 11- to 13-year-old students – mainly Intermediate School students, but others, including home schooled students, can enter.
in 2025, the theme "Together as One" inspired young artists to create powerful visual representations of people uniting to foster peace in the world. The Whangārei Lions Club and Hikurangi Lions clubs were both represented, and our Activity Centre walls were brought to life with more than 60 impressive and imaginative entries from seven local schools. Every student who submitted an entry demonstrated incredible passion and creativity.
Conservation Week 2024 School Poster Competition
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hundertwasser’s Conservation Week Poster, which launched Conservation Week into the minds of the public for the first time before it went on to become a global phenomenon, the Hundertwasser Art Centre held a Conservation Week 2024 poster competition for local schools. We had nearly one hundred entries from a wide range of schools including Parua Bay School, Whangārei Intermediate, St. Josephs School, Whangārei Heads School, Home School groups and others. The quality of entries was very high with vigorous conversation amongst the judging panel as to the winners who were Mathew from St Joseph’s School and Sadie from Whangārei Intermediate.
